Regulars are specific this falls within the rainy season here, several genuinely wet days a real possibility across a typical trip, though conditions stay meaningfully more comfortable than the following July once real summer heat and mugginess arrive. March here is the month before the famous one, and regulars are firm about it: the 18th or 19th is still too early for the Somei Yoshino at Yoshino, though weeping cherries come earlier and plum and early-blooming varieties are out from the start of the month. What that buys is space - early March falls between the year-end crowds and the blossom crowds, so the park and the deer are noticeably quieter. April is sakura month here - peak is usually from mid-April - and the Nara forum's advice is mostly about beating the day-trippers who come out from Kyoto and Osaka. Todaiji opens at 7:30 in April and stays comparatively quiet until 9 or 10, which is the argument for staying the night rather than arriving mid-morning. A day trip covers central Nara - Todaiji, the park, Kasuga Taisha - while Horyuji, Toshodaiji and Yakushiji need an overnight. On a wet day regulars are unbothered: fewer people come, and once you are inside Todaiji it makes no difference.
