Todaiji opens at 7:30 in April and stays comparatively quiet until 9 or 10, which is the argument for staying the night rather than arriving mid-morning. A day trip covers central Nara - Todaiji, the park, Kasuga Taisha - while Horyuji, Toshodaiji and Yakushiji need an overnight.
