On crowds the valley is unusually forgiving: it only really fills at weekends and on Japanese holidays, with Friday school groups and the Tokyo weekend the busy days, and Monday to Thursday close to empty. Forum posters cite typical Nagano temperatures in low teens Celsius by day in late October and early November, with early November running somewhat milder and more stable than mid-to-late October. Posters describe mid-November highs closer to 11C and lows near 1C, cool enough that a light down jacket becomes genuinely useful, especially in higher mountain areas that can dip below 10C. Posters note snow becomes a real possibility in mountainous spots like Yudanaka onsen from late November onward, though one visitor's late-November trip found earlier snow had already melted by the time they arrived, and posters caution the main ski season doesn't really get going in Nagano until early December. Posters generally rate November as cool and increasingly wintry toward month's end for Nagano, layers essential, meaningful snow still mostly a few weeks off at lower elevations.

Forum regulars call May one of the best weather months to visit Japan generally, and Nagano Prefecture's higher-elevation spots like Karuizawa run noticeably cooler than Tokyo - low 20sC by day even in early May. Conditions vary sharply with elevation though: up in the mountains around Kamikochi, snow can still linger into early May before the valley turns lush green by month's end, with snowy peaks visible in the distance even in the warmer weeks. One caveat for wildlife-focused visitors: snow itself is unlikely in May at the Snow Monkey Park, but the monkeys' appearances are unpredictable regardless of season, with no guaranteed viewing time.
