December here is warm, sunny and unlikely to be wet - our row gives 24.2C with 15.5mm across 2.8 precipitation days - but regulars call Christmas itself a lottery, with one year cold enough to send people shopping for jumpers and another over 43C for days on end. Our monthly average sits a long way under that upper figure. The reliable part is the calendar: Australian school holidays begin mid-December and run to the end of January, families rebook the same week year after year, and the stretch between Christmas and New Year is both the busiest and the dearest. Regulars name early December to late February as the favourite window for this corner of Western Australia, and February has a specific draw: harvest begins from about the middle of the month with the vines still lush and green. Any month works for the cellar doors - free tastings, restaurants, gardens - though they warn that some wineries have no air conditioning and get uncomfortable inside on a hot day.
