The strongest argument regulars make for April here is about an insect. Midges do not hatch this early - it is rare before May and sporadic until mid-June - so the walking is done without them, and the main season has not started, so the roads are quiet. July is peak midge season on Skye and the regulars' answer turns our own row into good news: it is the weather rather than the month that decides them, any breeze or sunlight keeps them down, and the trouble comes on warm still days in damp sheltered spots.
