The coastal city of Sochi itself sits at a much lower elevation and stays notably milder and more humid thanks to the Black Sea, so posters caution visitors to check current snow conditions rather than assume the coast matches the mountains - conditions can differ sharply between the beach town and the ski resort just an hour inland. For a winter trip focused on snow sports, basing in Krasnaya Polyana itself is the standard recommendation over staying down in Sochi and commuting up.
