January on this coast belongs to the nortes, and the board describes them precisely: strong north winds running from about mid-December through February, lasting two or three days at a time, at their worst in January and February. They churn the water, drop the air temperature and make swimming less inviting; they close the harbour to the fishermen but rarely stop the ferry, which simply becomes a rocky ride. December splits at the middle, and both halves of the split point the same way. Two corrections for an April trip to Isla Mujeres. The whale sharks are not here yet: the season runs from about 1 June to early September, with late July and August the peak, so a late-April tour is at best a long shot. And sargassum is: the season opens in late February and April to June is its worst stretch, arriving almost daily and in quantity. What April does offer is shoulder-season pricing, warm water, and fewer people - except around Easter, which regulars say to dodge if crowds bother you.
