Midges do not hatch this early - it is rare before May and sporadic until mid-June - so the walking is done without them, and the main season has not started, so the roads are quiet. April, May and June are also the driest months of the year on this coast. What they will not promise is the day itself: a fine one around 60F or a cold wet one around 40F or anything between, which brackets our average of 10.2C feeling like 7C. July is peak midge season on Skye and the regulars' answer turns our own row into good news: it is the weather rather than the month that decides them, any breeze or sunlight keeps them down, and the trouble comes on warm still days in damp sheltered spots.
