Posters consistently point out that the Kona side of the Big Island runs noticeably sunnier and drier at the same time of year, with South Kohala specifically named as the better bet for reliable December sun (albeit windier). Scheduling the Hilo portion of a trip for earlier in December is offered as a minor hedge, though posters are honest a full rain-out remains possible regardless of timing.
