A guide to Les Machines de l'Île in Nantes recommends booking a ride on the 12-metre mechanical elephant at least 48 hours ahead, and ideally several weeks out for busier periods, since the slow 30-minute, 500-metre journey (the elephant tops out at 1 km/h) only carries 40 people at a time. Their tip for anyone not paying for a ride: the elephant operates in the public domain rather than behind a fence, so you can walk alongside and genuinely experience it up close without a ticket, just without the ride itself.
