Visas & entry
A guide to Khiva's Itchan Kala old town recommends the Allakulli Khan Caravanserai as the best place to shop for handicrafts and textiles, where you can watch some pieces being made on-site, and where bargaining is genuinely part of how prices work rather than an awkward negotiation to avoid. Their timing advice given Khiva's climate extremes, up to 45°C in summer and as cold as -7°C in winter, was to aim for March-June or September-October, both for comfort and because the entire old town is compact enough to see fully on foot in a day or two even in the busier shoulder seasons.
