A guide to Heidelberg pushes back on treating it as a quick day trip from Frankfurt or Stuttgart, arguing that one day genuinely isn't enough and 2-3 days lets you actually get lost in the Altstadt's side streets rather than rushing the castle and leaving. Their advice for the castle specifically: it rewards a focused visit rather than hours of coverage, and the Heidelberg Bergbahn funicular from Kornmarkt is the easiest way up the hillside if you'd rather save your legs for the Philosopher's Walk on the opposite side of the Neckar.
