Wildlife
A traveler gives a candid, warts-and-all account of Bocas del Toro rather than pure hype, but still rates the boat-based island-hopping day as the genuine highlight most visitors should prioritize - within a few hours on the water she encountered dolphins, snorkeled a coral reef, walked an untouched white-sand beach and glided through mangrove channels specifically looking for sloths. She describes one stop where six sloths were visible simultaneously, including a mother with a baby, a level of wildlife density that genuinely surprised her compared to sloth-spotting attempts elsewhere in Central America. Other travelers specifically recommend the Zapatilla Islands as the best of the various boat-tour routes available, and note Sloth Island lets you spot sloths from the boat itself, though landing on the island isn't permitted. Posters generally rate at least one full-day boat tour as close to mandatory for a Bocas visit, since the individual islands and mangrove channels aren't really accessible any other way.
