A visitor's guide to Ålesund's Art Nouveau architecture recommends climbing the 418 steps to Fjellstua for the town's best vantage point, with islands, mountains, and fjords stretching out below, built on seven islands connected by bridges and tunnels after being rebuilt following a devastating 1904 fire. Their timing advice: three days is the sweet spot, one for the town's turquoise-spired old streets, one for a Geirangerfjord boat trip, and one for a puffin-watching excursion to Runde Island, leaving genuinely enough time to feel like you've seen the region rather than just the town.
