Regulars recommend mid-January over the very start of the month for fewer blizzard and fog days, though heavy snowfall can still cut visibility and close lifts on the wrong day.

January is the snow month the whole place exists for — metres of it, dry, and it falls most days. The trade-off is that you rarely see the mountain: visibility is the thing to book flexibly around, not snowfall.

Regulars are specific that late in this month sits in a genuine lull - autumn colors from early-to-mid October already fading, while the city's famous snow hasn't yet arrived, making late October a quieter, less dramatic stretch for anyone timing a visit around either spectacle.
