Osorno Volcano kept vanishing behind cloud most afternoons, so we learned to plan our viewpoint walks for the morning, when the odds of a clear summit shot were noticeably better. The town's German architecture, dating back to settler families who arrived in 1852, gave Puerto Varas a completely different feel from anywhere else we'd been in Chile. We walked everywhere, since the lakefront attractions all sat within easy reach on foot along Lake Llanquihue. A kayaking trip one afternoon brought us close enough to sea lions that our guide had to remind us to keep paddling rather than just staring. Packable rain gear stayed in our daypack the whole trip given how fast the weather could turn.
