We hired a guide at the Vallée de Mai entrance specifically to spot the endemic wildlife, and it paid off within twenty minutes when they pointed out a black parrot we'd have walked right past. The reserve's coco de mer palms, producing the largest seed in the world, genuinely justified the entrance fee of 450 rupees on their own. We took the longer two-to-three-hour circular route rather than the quick one-hour version, and the trails stayed well-marked and easy underfoot the whole way despite feeling deep in the forest. The reserve's quiet, filled mostly with birdsong and rustling palm fronds, was a welcome change of pace from the beaches we'd spent the rest of the trip on.

Resenärernas anteckningar om Praslin

Vad de som har varit där säger om platsen — anteckningarna som gäller året runt först, sedan månad för månad.

Seychelles-forum threads on January weather (the numbers track Praslin directly) are candid that it's technically the rainiest month of the year, but posters are quick to add that patterns run in three-to-four day cycles, so a stay of a week or more should see both a wet stretch and a genuinely sunny one. Typical days follow a rhythm where showers arrive later in the day and mornings run clear, similar to the pattern regulars compare to Hawaii - short, heavy bursts rather than a persistent drizzle. One visitor's late-January trip logged just two days with meaningful rain across a nine-night stay, with two brief five-to-ten-minute daytime showers otherwise. The Seychelles sit outside the true monsoon and typhoon belt, so posters note the risk is wet days, not violent storms. The record: 27.1C days feeling like a sticky 31C, 25.7C nights, a notably high 274mm across nearly 20 days, 81 percent humidity, a 28.3C sea and 9.6 hours of sun.

Forum posters consistently describe March rain in the Seychelles as stormy but short, typically 10-15 minute showers followed by sunny weather again, with March generally bringing less rain than February and seas staying comparatively calm. Posters flag a real geographic factor worth knowing: it rains more around the higher mountains of Mahé, and posters generally recommend Praslin or La Digue over Mahé for more reliably good weather. Trip reports vary day to day, as expected - one visitor in early March described a few days of light morning showers followed by bright sun and a successful hike to Anse Lazio, while another described mostly sunny, hot conditions with just one full rain day. Posters generally rate March as a favorable, comparatively stable month to visit Praslin.

Seychelles-forum threads on April weather (numbers track Praslin directly) call it the calmest and hottest month of the year - technically still inside the wet season by the calendar, but posters describe it as usually sunny with only occasional rain in a good year. April is also singled out as the month the trade winds flip from southeast to northwest, a transition that brings calmer waters and better underwater visibility just as the snorkeling season opens up. One recurring detail from repeat visitors: seaweed shifts by beach this month, some of Praslin's popular stretches staying clear while others pick up more of it. Regulars call April one of the strongest picks of the year for hot, mostly-sunny weather and calm, clear seas. The record: 28.3C days feeling like a sticky 34C, 26.7C nights, 133mm across 17.9 days, 79 percent humidity, a 30.6C sea and 10.4 hours of sun - more rain days than the "usually sunny" framing implies, though the heat and calm seas both check out.

Praslin-forum threads on May specifically call out the seaweed situation on Cote d'Or: the trade winds typically shift direction in April, and by May the beach is usually clear again, crystal water and none of the seaweed buildup that can affect it earlier in the year. The same clearing effect is described for Anse Georgette, Anse Lazio and Anse Source d'Argent, all called seaweed-free bets by May. The southeast trade winds pick up starting in May, running through September, though posters say the month isn't yet at peak windiness. Forecasts here are called notoriously overcautious, one visitor reporting an entire May stay without a single wet day despite regular rain predictions. May and October are grouped as similarly moderate rainfall months, May the hotter of the two. The record: 27.9C days feeling like a sticky 32C, 26.4C nights, a notably high 207mm across 20.2 days, 81 percent humidity, a 29.7C sea and 10.1 hours of sun.

July is the peak of the Seychelles' south-east monsoon, and on Praslin that means three things at once: the roughest seas of the year, the strongest trade winds - our row carries 30.9 kph - and seaweed in quantity. The forum is precise about where it lands. Grand Anse and Anse Kerlan on Praslin's western side collect it; Cote d'Or is the beach they name as protected from both the wind and the weed, with Beau Vallon the equivalent on Mahe. Water visibility is poor in this season and weak swimmers are told to wear a vest. The compensation is temperature: July is one of the cooler months here, not exceeding 27 or 28C, which our row gives as 25.5C. The record: 24.6C nights, 13.6 precipitation days carrying 70.6mm and a 26.7C sea.

August is the roughest month of the Seychelles year and the cause is the south-east trades: July and August bring the strongest of them, with choppy water and the poorest snorkelling of the year, especially on a beach that faces into it. The same wind moves seaweed - on Praslin it piles up on Grand Anse and Anse Kerlan, and on Mahe along the south and south-west coasts. The forum's answer is a coast rather than a month: Cote d'Or on Praslin and Beau Vallon on Mahe stay clear and clear-watered, and carry the shops, restaurants and agencies as well. Our row has the wind at 30.6 kph. The record: 25.5C days that feel like 28C, 24.6C nights, 12.2 precipitation days carrying 61.8mm and a 26.6C sea.

Seychelles forum threads describe September as cool and windy by local standards, with large southeast swells the norm - beaches facing the southeast like Grande Anse get rougher water and worse seaweed, while west-facing spots like Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette stay more sheltered. Several posters actually rated September as close to ideal overall despite the wind, since it sits near the end of the windy season with generally reliable weather. That said, the wind doesn't always taper off on schedule - one poster recalled a year it didn't ease until early November - and forum consensus was that October tends to bring calmer seas and better underwater visibility once the wind direction shifts.

Seychelles-forum threads on October weather (unpredictable enough that one thread is literally titled 'confused') call it a really good month on balance - the start of the wetter season by the calendar, but with more sun than showers in practice, temperatures barely moving in a 25-to-30C band all month. A typical day can run through sun, clouds, a shower and back to sun within a few hours, and the pattern itself is inconsistent week to week: sunny one week, three cloudy, showery days the next. The one upside regulars agree on unconditionally: October is called the best month for snorkeling, the ocean calmer and visibility better as the prevailing wind shifts from south-east to north-west, with Cote d'Or on Praslin specifically recommended for staying free of seaweed. The record: 26.8C days feeling like 31C, 25.6C nights, 97mm across 14.1 days, a 28.3C sea, 80 percent humidity and 10.9 hours of sun.
