Bra att veta innan du åker till Prague

Verkliga erfarenheter från resenärers egna texter, citerade med länk till originalet.

Pengar

A traveler exchanging money on the street in Prague describes getting a suspiciously good rate from an individual who claimed to be leaving the country and wanted Czech koruna off his hands - only to realize afterward, after checking the notes, that he'd actually been handed Belarusian rubles, a currency that looks superficially similar at a glance but is worthless in the Czech Republic. Locals who've written about the pattern describe legitimate-looking exchange booths as an equally real trap: signs advertise '0% commission' prominently while burying a poor buy/sell spread, typically 15-25% worse than the interbank rate, in the fine print. Their consistent advice: only exchange at a Czech bank ATM (ČSOB, Česká spořitelna, Moneta) or a bank branch, never with a street approacher, and if using an exchange counter, ask the clerk to state the exact final koruna amount before handing over any cash.

Resenärernas anteckningar om Prague

Vad de som har varit där säger om platsen — anteckningarna som gäller året runt först, sedan månad för månad.

Prague has a humid continental climate, with relatively cold winters (around the point of freezing). Snow cover occurs between mid-November and late March. The snow cover rarely stays around for more than a week or two. Summers usually bring plenty of sunshine and the average high temperature of 24°C. Precipitation in Prague is rather low, the driest season usually being the winter. During late spring and summer heavy rain may occur, often in the form of thundershowers. Temperature inversions are relatively common around winter, bringing foggy, cold days and sometimes moderate air pollution. Prague is a windy city with common sustained western winds and an average wind speed of .

The forum's answer to "is January too cold" is emphatically no: "IMO it's the best time to go," and "while it was flipping cold, it was magical." Cold here means real cold — one regular's fond memory is "-10°C on Karlův most early in the morning." What you buy with it is the city without the crowds: "less tourist-infested than the warmer months," and "it feels more like the real Prague in winter." Posters describe some snow still on the ground and call the city breathtaking in it. The honest caveats are that some attractions close or cut hours, and wandering the streets is simply less pleasant. Advice is layers and warm shoes, since bars and restaurants are heated hard. Our record: 4.4°C days, -0.8°C nights, 13.4cm of snow and only 3.6 hours of sun a day.

Prague forum regulars describe March honestly as still cold at the start but genuinely rewarding by the sun: “generally cold in early march but, if the sun is shining it is very pleasant and often one of the best times to come here.” Typical mid-March readings run “highs of 8C during the day, lows of 0C at night,” though the range can swing from “minus lots with snow to plus 15” depending on the year. Rain stays relatively low through March and the first half of April before picking up into May. The practical warning that repeats: cobblestones get genuinely slippery when wet, so slip-resistant shoes matter as much as a warm coat. Our record: 10.3°C days, 1°C nights, 8.4 rain days and 2.1cm of snow — cold with real snow risk, matching the “cold start, can turn lovely” read.

Prague forum regulars call June the start of “sandal and short pant weather” with “excellent long days to be outside,” but warn early June specifically has been “very changeable in the last few years, one hot, two cold and raining and the other just cold.” Most agree it should be “warm enough to do without a jacket (or with a light one for the evenings),” with rain a real but not defining possibility. The crowd upside: European school holidays don't kick in until late June, so visitors miss the super peak of tourism that hits in July and August. Our record: 24.7°C days, 14.4°C nights, 13.4 rain days and 16.3 hours of daylight — warm with real rain risk, more consistent than “changeable” implies but matching the jacket-optional read.

The Prague forum's recurring July advice: book air-conditioned lodging if you can find it. Most Prague apartments and even some hotels don't have it, and the handful of properly hot days a season — high 20s to mid-30s°C — land disproportionately in July and August.

August here runs from the mid-twenties to the low thirties, or turns cool and rainy in the low twenties, and regulars tell you to bring the raincoat either way. Our row gives 26.2C reading as 27C with 83.5mm across 11.5 days - a wetter month than its reputation. The rest of their advice is about people rather than weather: the city is packed, the bridge and the old square are worst on the hour, and the fix is to see them before breakfast and spend the middle of the day in the quarters the crowds skip - the Jewish quarter, Kampa island, Mala Strana, the hill. Nights fall to 16C. The record: humidity 66 percent, 10.5 hours of sun and AQI 51.

Prague's September, per the forum: sunny and bright, still warm by day without being roasting — highs near 21°C — but chilly at night once lows drop to about 12, and variable enough that some days arrive cloudy and wet. The real reason regulars pick it is the crowd curve, not the thermometer: the peak tourist season is over by early autumn and late September into October is noticeably calmer, though nobody pretends Prague is ever tourist-free. September also carries a dense run of music, dance, food and art festivals.

Prague-forum threads on December weather describe temperatures typically hovering right around freezing, colder overnight, with the heaviest rains of the year already behind the city by this point in the calendar. Snow is possible but posters call it inconsistent this early in winter - some Decembers deliver a proper dusting over the Christmas markets, others stay grey and dry underfoot for weeks at a stretch. Regulars are firm that snow boots and a full parka are overkill; a warm coat, real layers underneath and sturdy walking shoes handle the cobblestones fine. The markets themselves stay lively into the evening, and the main sights and museums run on normal hours throughout, so a short, cold day outside is easily balanced with plenty of indoor options. The record: 5.7C days feeling like 2C, 1.5C nights, 45mm across 10.6 days, 7.3cm of fresh snowfall, 84 percent humidity and just 3.4 hours of sun.

December scores cold and is: 0°C, damp, dark by four. The markets in Old Town Square and the Náměstí Míru one make up for it, and the castle in snow is worth the numb fingers. Ice on the cobbles is the real hazard.
