Bra att veta innan du åker till Berlin

Seder & bruk

A visitor describes waiting roughly three hours in a 250-meter queue outside Berghain, Berlin's famously selective techno club, only to be turned away by the doorman with a flat, unexplained 'no.' Another account describes attempting entry four times in a single day, at one point being silently waved off after simply saying 'we're here together' to the bouncer. Regulars describe a rejection rate of 60% or higher on a typical night, and treat getting past the notoriously unpredictable door staff (including longtime bouncer Sven Marquardt) as something of a rite of passage rather than a reflection of anything the visitor did wrong. Posters generally recommend going in alone or as a small, quiet group, avoiding obvious tourist behavior in line, and mentally preparing for rejection as the likely outcome rather than the exception.

Resenärernas anteckningar om Berlin

Vad de som har varit där säger om platsen — anteckningarna som gäller året runt först, sedan månad för månad.

Berlin is at a transition point between temperate oceanic and continental climates, meaning warm summers and cold winters. Nighttime temperatures typically fall below freezing in the winter, and snowfall is a regular occurrence, though the snow rarely accumulates for more than a few days. Summers are typically pleasant, with daytime temperatures typically in the low 20s, and nighttime temperatures staying above 10 °C. Berlin is a rather windy city, though by no means as windy as coastal cities like Hamburg or Lübeck. A wind-stopping jacket comes highly recommended, especially during autumn and spring.

Berlin forum threads describe January as the coldest of the winter months, with temperatures typically ranging from around 10C down to -10C and conditions swinging between sunny, rainy, snowy or foggy depending on the day. Posters reported real year-to-year variability - one visitor's first January trip brought cold and real snow, while later visits ran milder (0 to +10C) but greyer with no snow at all. The consistent advice: dress in layers given how warm museums and indoor spaces run, and pack shoes with real grip and warmth given icy or slick sidewalks - tourist attractions stay fully open through January regardless of what the sky does.

Regulars are direct that early and late May can differ dramatically in the same year - one stretch genuinely sunny and warm past 25C, another rainy with highs barely into double digits - making a specific week's forecast far more useful than the monthly average. Our row backs a mild average sitting between those extremes, 20.3C over 9.2C nights feeling 7C, with 29.6mm of rain across 6.1 days. The standard advice from regulars is layering plus a light waterproof jacket and umbrella regardless of which half of the month a visit falls in, since the swing is real rather than a rare exception. The record: humidity 65 percent, 11.4 hours of sun, a 17.4 kph wind and AQI 50.

A local regular gives June a statistic that sounds worse than it is: "statistically June has the most rainfall of all months in Berlin" — while also noting that June to August have the most sunshine hours and the fewest days with rain. Both are true at once, and the explanation is in how it falls: "rainfalls in summer are rather short and heavy, thus experienced normally as quite refreshing interruptions." Big totals, few events. The same poster adds a geography detail worth knowing if you're staying out of the centre — rainfall in Berlin's north-west and south-west runs about a third higher than in the middle of the city — and the reminder that none of it means it will rain during your particular stay. Our record has 8.4 rain days, 46mm, 25.5°C days and nearly 17 hours of daylight.

Regulars describe July here as capable of either extreme in the same summer - fifteen degrees and rain one week, thirty-five and burning sun the next - and note it never reaches Mediterranean humidity even on the hot days, because the climate stays dry. Our row lands closer to the mild end, 25.6C over 15.1C, with 72.4mm across 9.8 days. Their answer to a hot stretch is specific and local: this city is ringed with lakes for exactly that reason, and they name Schlachtensee and the adjoining Krumme Lanke - both about forty minutes out by S-bahn, ringed with shady sandy coves - as better swimming than the more crowded Wannsee beach. Beer gardens open across the city the moment the weather allows it. The record: humidity 64.5 percent, 11.5 hours of sun, a 16.3 kph wind and AQI 50.

Berlin-forum threads on summer crowding make an explicit comparison: busy, yes, but nothing like Rome, Paris, Istanbul, London or Amsterdam in August - only a handful of spots (the Reichstag Dome, the Pergamon Museum, the TV Tower) actually run near capacity, and posters note every attraction stays open through the month. The weather gets the opposite warning: August is 'not guaranteed blue-sky', and more than one thread describes heat and rain arriving in the same afternoon. The record matches that unpredictability: 26C days, 15.1C nights, 47mm of rain across six and a half days, and 10.7 hours of sun - warm enough for outdoor evenings, not dry enough to leave the layer at the hotel.

Early September here is summer without August's heat, mid-twenties and pleasant, and regulars are emphatic that the 1st and the 30th are not the same month - autumn arrives somewhere in between. Our row averages 21.9C reading as 20C over 11.5C nights. It is a dry month by German standards, 35.6mm across 5.5 days, but they warn the rain when it comes is sudden, short and heavy, so the light waterproof stays in the bag. The other thing to know is the diary: a major trade fair, a festival and the marathon fall in consecutive weeks, and hotel prices follow them. The record: humidity 70 percent, 8.8 hours of sun inside 12.7 of daylight, a 16.1 kph wind and AQI 46.

Berlin in December, per the forum: dark by about 4pm, highs near 5°C and nights at freezing, and it feels colder still standing around a Christmas market after sunset. Regulars warn against expecting a winter wonderland — snow is possible but never guaranteed, and cold, grey and damp is the likelier draw; one year the markets opened at 17°C. Their packing advice is specific: head, hands and feet first — a hat that covers the ears, thermal gloves, genuinely warm socks.
