Days stay sunny and warm with cooler evenings, and it is only right at the end of September into early October that daytime temperatures really begin to fall. The trade-off regulars like: noticeably fewer tourists and a chilled end-of-season feel, set against some restaurants beginning to close.

Regulars call this potentially the very best month here, but the least predictable one too, capable of a warm, sunny stretch or genuinely cold, wet and windy days within the same visit - the island's western position facing wetter conditions than the Greek mainland's east side compounds that risk. May divides this board along one question, whether the sea is swimmable. Some report the last two weeks perfectly fine; others call it a quick dip and out; everyone agrees it does not properly warm until mid-June, and that the west coast runs cooler again.
