March here is the month before the famous one, and regulars are firm about it: the 18th or 19th is still too early for the Somei Yoshino at Yoshino, though weeping cherries come earlier and plum and early-blooming varieties are out from the start of the month. What that buys is space - early March falls between the year-end crowds and the blossom crowds, so the park and the deer are noticeably quieter. April is sakura month here - peak is usually from mid-April - and the Nara forum's advice is mostly about beating the day-trippers who come out from Kyoto and Osaka. Todaiji opens at 7:30 in April and stays comparatively quiet until 9 or 10, which is the argument for staying the night rather than arriving mid-morning. A day trip covers central Nara - Todaiji, the park, Kasuga Taisha - while Horyuji, Toshodaiji and Yakushiji need an overnight. On a wet day regulars are unbothered: fewer people come, and once you are inside Todaiji it makes no difference.
