Playa El Faro got busy fast once summer set in, so we skipped south to the quieter Playa Cuatro Esquinas most afternoons, where a boardwalk let us walk the coast without fighting sand the whole way. Strong currents near the lighthouse beach made it clear why surfers cluster there while swimmers stick to calmer stretches further along. We booked a stargazing tour at Mamalluca Observatory in Vicuña weeks ahead after reading how popular the slots get, and the clarity of the sky out there lived up to every claim about the region's astrotourism reputation. December through February brought the warmest water and the biggest summer crowds, which we'd factor into timing differently on a return trip.
Reisendes notater om La Serena
Hva folk som har vært der, sier om stedet — notatene som gjelder hele året først, så måned for måned.
January is high summer and the Chilean coast fills up - January and February both. The thing to understand about La Serena is the cold current: the coast gets morning mist and air temperatures hold around 20C, while the Elqui Valley, less than an hour inland, sits under blue sky and well into the 30s. That is why regulars point at the valley as the reason to come north, with Vicuna about two hours out and Pisco Elqui half an hour beyond it, and most of the good hotels there having pools. Our row confirms the coast's own version: 22.3C days, a sea at 18.2C and essentially no rain at all. The record: 15.5C nights, humidity 72 percent and 12.4 hours of sun.
La Serena's forum is clear that hot February days don't mean warm water — regulars describe the sea as frigidly cold with powerful currents that keep most people out of it altogether, even at the height of Chilean summer. It's peak vacation season for Chileans too, so accommodation books up well ahead.
Regulars are specific this falls within the November-through-March window locally considered the warm, sunny stretch, April bringing a noticeably cooler autumn - so late March still counts as one of the better months even sitting right at the tail end. Our row backs that mild, genuinely dry read, 17.9C over 14.6C nights feeling 16C, with rain essentially absent, 0.4mm across just 0.1 days. Regulars are consistent the Humboldt current keeps the sea cold year-round regardless of how warm the land gets, a westerly wind capable of knocking beach-day air temps down several degrees even at midday, a wetsuit the practical answer for anyone planning to swim rather than just sunbathe. The sea sits at a cool 18.2C. The record: 10.8 hours of sun, humidity 75.9 percent and AQI 28.
Forum posters describe August as bringing not much rain to the La Serena area, with the nearby Elqui Valley specifically prized for around 300 sunny days a year - real clear-sky conditions even in the depths of Southern Hemisphere winter. Posters are direct that mornings and nights still run genuinely cold this time of year, so warm layers remain necessary despite the daytime sun, and posters note conditions often improve further by the end of August. Posters consistently recommend June through August as a workable window for visiting this part of Chile, positioning the region's clear, dry winter climate as a real selling point rather than something to plan around.
