A traveler describes the price shock hitting within the first hour in Zurich: stepping off the train and grabbing a takeaway coffee that runs 5.50-6 Swiss francs, compared to around 3 euros in most other European capitals - a genuinely jarring first impression for anyone arriving from elsewhere in Europe. Data backs up the anecdote: a cafe crème in Zurich averages around CHF 4.86, with some restaurants charging up to CHF 6-7 for the same cup. The writer's actual takeaway after spending more time in the city, though, is that the sticker shock is front-loaded and somewhat misleading - not everything in Zurich costs proportionally more, and understanding which categories (dining out, coffee, alcohol) carry the real premium versus which don't (public transit passes, many museums) softens the overall impression considerably. Posters generally recommend budgeting extra specifically for cafes and restaurants while not assuming the whole trip will be uniformly as expensive as that first coffee suggests.

Zurich forum regulars keep January's temperature claim modest: daytime temperatures “27-36°F (-3 to 2°C), in the mountains maybe 11-29°F (-2 to -12°C).” Snow is genuinely unpredictable in the city itself — days with snow but they are not predictable, and then the snow melts within hours — while the lowland plateau (Zurich, Lucerne, Bern down to Lausanne and Geneva) sits under low fog that “generally tops out at 1000m,” which is why the mountains often sit in clear sunshine while the city stays grey. Dark by 5pm is called really dark, a genuine constraint on sightseeing time. Standard advice: dress warmly and carry on regardless, with mountain railways and cable cars offering a coffee or hot chocolate above the fog line. Our record: 4.2°C days, -1.7°C nights, 36.9cm of snow and 5.6 hours of sun — cold and genuinely snowy, matching the “unpredictable snow in the city, clear above the fog” read.

Zurich's forum calls April thoroughly unpredictable — daytime temperatures typically 12-18°C but capable of sunny 20°C afternoons or a return of winterly cold fronts, especially at higher elevations. Regulars note Zurich itself rarely sees snow this time of year even when the mountains do, and the standard packing advice is layers plus a genuinely wind- and waterproof jacket rather than trusting any single forecast.

The June question is the lake, and the answer is that it is Alpine meltwater, so it can still be chilly and its temperature depends mostly on the previous week's weather rather than on the date. Almost every village along the shore has its own Badi, so the swimming is easy once the water allows it. On land regulars give about 22C as the June average against our 25C, and note the range across recent years has run from 12C to 33C. Heat brings thunderstorms, short ones, and almost always in the late afternoon or evening - which is how to read our 132mm across 11.9 days under 11.7 hours of sun. The record: 14.7C nights, humidity 73 percent and AQI 58.

Switzerland's forum calls July hot in the lower cities like Zurich and Bern, with locals swimming outdoors around 29°C on the warmest days. Regulars are consistent that current conditions mean little for a trip weeks out — pack layers and a waterproof shell so you're covered for a sunny stretch or a run of afternoon thunderstorms.

Regulars are blunt this month is genuinely hard to predict year to year - some summers running dry, sunny and warm straight through, others delivering near-continuous rain from June into late August, with no reliable way to know which version a given trip lands on. Our row backs the warm, genuinely wet read, 25.9C reading as a hot 27C, over 15.8C nights, with a substantial 128mm of rain across 10.2 days and humidity at 73 percent, regulars specifically calling the combination of warmth and humidity uncomfortable when it hits. Regulars are consistent that short, heavy downpours in the afternoon or evening are common even during an otherwise pleasant stretch, sun never quite guaranteed for a full day. A packable rain layer stays the standard advice regardless of the forecast. The record: 10.6 hours of sun, an 8.5 kph wind and AQI 54.

September here is the month after the crowds: warm enough by day to reach the twenties, with mornings and evenings that have turned properly cool. Regulars date the end of the swimming season precisely - their last lake swim usually falls between the 17th and the 22nd - which is a better marker than any average. Our row gives 20.9C over 12.3C, and is less flattering than their reputation on rain: 104.7mm across 10.2 days with only 9.1 hours of sun. The autumn colour they recommend planning around belongs to the end of October, not now. The record: humidity 78 percent, an 8.4 kph wind and AQI 50.

Forum threads put a normal autumn day at 8-15C, with some warmer late-summer-feeling days but also colder, rainy or foggy ones mixed in - sometimes all three flavors trade off within the same week. Early October can still see highs near 20C, but posters consistently flag anything after about the 20th as "dodgy," with real risk of persistent plateau and valley fog setting in by the 25th. The standard packing advice is a layer, a pullover and a light raincoat; snow in the city itself is not expected this early.
