We used Urumqi as our entry point into Xinjiang, flying in and then arranging onward transport from there, and it felt safe, organized and welcoming the whole time we were getting oriented. Alipay and WeChat Pay covered nearly every purchase, so we barely needed cash. Because travel to many areas outside the city required an Alien Travel Permit, we sorted that before heading further into the region. What stuck with us most was the food: lamb skewers, hand-pulled noodles and pilaf from stalls representing several of China's ethnic groups, all within a few blocks of our hotel.

Forum posters describe March in Ürümqi and the wider Xinjiang region as still quite cold, with posters reporting snow as late as early April in some years, meaning March itself should be treated as still winter-like. Posters flag March as sandstorm season across eastern Xinjiang and the neighboring Hexi Corridor, generally recommending May instead for anyone wanting to avoid that risk. Posters visiting nearby areas in early April described fine weather but little greenery yet, with grapevines only just emerging from winter dormancy - a sign of how slowly spring arrives in this part of China. Posters generally rate March as a genuinely challenging month for Ürümqi, cold, dry, and prone to dust storms, with better options available later in spring.

By late September, fall color turns the leaves red and yellow against snow-covered distant mountains, a combination posters call genuinely postcard-worthy. One practical caveat from a nearby high-altitude excursion: even with pleasant daytime temperatures in the low-20sC, nights can drop sharply at elevation, so warm layers for any overnight side trip are worth packing regardless of how mild the city itself feels. Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), a popular day trip from Urumqi, is only accessible May through September.
