hiking
We took the ferry from San Jorge just after 7am, an easy crossing that dropped us in Moyogalpa ready for the island's slow pace. Climbing Concepción took the better part of a day, eight to ten hours round trip starting well before dawn to beat the heat on the exposed lower slopes, with our mandatory guide keeping pace steady and pointing out the sweeping views over Lake Nicaragua as we climbed. Maderas the following day was a different kind of hard, steep and humid enough that we went through nearly all our water before reaching a summit too fogged in to see the crater lake. We'd picked January specifically for the dry season and had reliable weather on both climbs, though the rainy season travelers we met seemed to enjoy the cultural side of the island just as much.

Forum posters describe March as squarely in Nicaragua's dry season - hot, dusty and brown across the countryside, with March and April named as the hottest months of the year. Posters flag the 'papagallos' winds specifically, a windy pattern from January through March caused by cold North American air meeting hot dry southern air, though posters note winds start relaxing again by March after peaking in January and February. Posters describe the wind as more of a helpful breeze than a nuisance on the hot Pacific-facing side of the island, keeping things comfortable rather than annoying, with conditions settling further still by the time April arrives.
Ometepe's forum genuinely likes September - breezy mornings and evenings, plenty of hot sun, and rain that keeps the island's twin volcanoes lush and green rather than ruining the trip. The rain pattern is hard and short rather than an all-day soak, often overnight or in the morning, and posters were clear it's rare for a day to be a total washout. The one real downside mentioned repeatedly: even with quick-drying streets, the volcanic soil stays muddy in low spots, so sturdy footwear matters. September is also low season, meaning noticeably cheaper prices across the island.
