  Okinawa's cherry is the deep pink hikanzakura and it opens in January, two months before the mainland. Nago Castle Park and the switchbacks up Mount Yaedake are where the island goes for it.

  The islands enter the rain front about a month before the mainland and leave it about a month earlier. It comes as long grey spells rather than afternoon storms, and the outer-island ferries are the first thing cancelled.
