食事・飲み物

We stayed right in the historic center, everything within a fifteen-minute walk, and spent one whole afternoon just working through the stalls at Mercado de Dulces y Artesanias sampling local candies until we couldn't eat another bite. Tarasca soup, a pinto bean and tomato dish, became our go-to order at every restaurant we tried after the first bowl. We rented a car for a day trip to the butterfly reserve and stopped in Quiroga along the way, which locals call the carnitas capital of the world for good reason. Mezcal with grain salt and citrus replaced margaritas for the rest of the trip once we tried it the local way at a small bar off the main plaza.

January and February are the months to be in Morelia for the monarchs, and the forum's advice is about the hour and the sky rather than the date. The butterflies stay clamped to the trees while it is cold or cloudy and only take flight as the sun reaches the forest, so a bright warm day is the whole trip and a cold, part-cloudy one is a wasted drive - the threshold people quote is around 15C, above which the colony becomes active. Morelia itself sits high, with the cold arriving close to midnight and mornings properly chilly before warming fast, which our row shows as 25.7C days over 7.2C nights. The record: 2.8 precipitation days carrying 11mm, humidity 59 percent and 9.8 hours of sun.

Morelia's forum calls February generally warm and sunny by day, short-sleeve weather even up in the surrounding mountains, but genuinely capable of dropping to near-freezing at night given the region's elevation. Regulars flag rain as rare this time of year, and note locals often keep a rebozo on hand for the evening chill — it's also butterfly-migration season nearby.

Regulars are specific daytime highs commonly land in the sun around 20 to 25C with evenings cooling fast enough for a light jacket, nights capable of dropping toward freezing on a cold snap even though rain itself stays genuinely rare here. Our row backs that hot, genuinely dry read, 30.8C reading as a hot 30C, over 10.5C nights feeling 9C, with rain light at 11.8mm across 3.1 days and humidity down to 48 percent. Regulars are consistent the shade runs noticeably cooler than direct sun, worth factoring into what to wear for a day of walking the colonial center. This remains a genuinely comfortable month overall for exploring on foot. The record: 11.2 hours of sun, an 11.6 kph wind and AQI 40.

Forum posters name August and September as the wettest, most humid months across much of Mexico generally, though posters are consistent the more oppressive heat-and-humidity combination is really a low-lying coastal problem - Morelia, sitting up in central Mexico's high-elevation interior alongside cities like Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende, avoids that particular discomfort even in the wet season. That said, rain itself remains a frequent, near-daily feature of an August stay here regardless of elevation, typically arriving as an afternoon or evening shower rather than an all-day washout. Posters generally recommend late October onward, once the wet season fully clears, for anyone specifically prioritizing dry, sunny days over the lush, green late-summer landscape.

October is the month this colonial highland city turns pleasant again, after August and September carry the wettest, most humid stretch of the year. Regulars put the days around 25C and cooler at night - our row reads a touch warmer, 27C over 12.3C, a fifteen-degree spread that is normal for this altitude. Rain is still present at 58mm across 10.1 days, typically overnight or a brief afternoon shower rather than an all-day soak, the pattern the whole interior shares this month. The true dry season here does not start until mid-March, so October is a transition rather than an arrival, and the elevation is the whole point of coming - hurricanes and coastal heat are somebody else's problem. The record: humidity 76 percent, 10 hours of sun, a 9.4 kph wind and AQI 44.

The monarchs are in Michoacan from November to March and November is the start rather than the peak: regulars who went early found trees already covered but the butterflies unsettled, moving constantly, and they rate January and February higher because those months are warmer. The timing advice is precise and it is about hours, not weeks. Butterflies stay hanging when it is cold or cloudy, and cloud rolls in around midday, so aim to reach the sanctuary late morning with enough sun to lift them. Note the altitude split too: Morelia sits near 2000m, which is what our 26.7C day over a 9.9C night describes, while the reserves are well above 2500m and colder. The record: 27.2mm across 4.6 precipitation days, 10 hours of sun, an 8.7 kph wind and AQI 49.

The board disagrees with itself about December nights here - one account puts them in the upper 60s Fahrenheit, another has ice forming on outdoor water - and our row sides with the ice at 7.4C against 25.4C days, an eighteen-degree swing. What they agree on is the timing: the cold arrives close to midnight, the mornings are chilly and it warms up fast, so the day is pleasant and the edges are not. The monarch reserves are the usual reason to come, and they are a different climate - the city sits near 2,000m and the sanctuaries well above 2,500m, cold with a good chance of mist. The butterflies are in from autumn but peak in January and February. The record: 16.5mm across 3.3 days, humidity 64 percent and 9.8 hours of sun.
