Forum posters call February genuinely fickle - year to year it can bring heavy rain or perfectly clear skies, and technically counts as the area's coldest month even though conditions steadily warm from here through the warmest month, September. The standard advice is to expect a mix of rainy and sunny days and pack layers accordingly, with a real possibility that a storm triggers mudslide-related closures on Highway 1 through Big Sur - worth checking before a scenic drive. On the upside, posters note early February can bring genuinely lovely, clear stretches along Big Sur and the Monterey Peninsula (timed with an annual golf tournament), and January-through-March is prime whale-watching migration season regardless of the day's weather.

Regulars name this June Gloom, a thick marine layer that can sit overcast and foggy all day some visits or burn off to a beautiful afternoon on others - not the low, visibility-restricting kind of fog but more like a persistent cloud ceiling, genuinely unpredictable day to day. Our row backs the cool, damp read that fog implies, 18.9C over 11.3C nights, with rain essentially absent, 0.4mm across under a day, and 81 percent humidity from the marine air rather than rain itself. Regulars are split on how much it bothers them - one calls it thoroughly depressing given blue sky is visible just a few miles inland, while most say layering appropriately makes it a non-issue with plenty to do regardless. The sea stays cold at 14.4C. The record: 13.2 hours of sun, a 14.8 kph wind and AQI 36.

July is one of Monterey's two foggiest months, and the forum is blunt about what that means: fog on roughly half the days, several days in a row without sun entirely possible, and a pattern of foggy mornings clearing around ten and the fog returning in the afternoon. Pacific Grove, Carmel and Pebble Beach get it worst. The temperature stays mild inside it - 65 to 75F, our row's 19.2C at 82 percent humidity - which is why layers is the whole advice. The escape is a short drive: five miles inland is about 20 degrees warmer under a cloudless sky. Our row records no precipitation days at all in July, which is the point - this is fog, not rain. The record: 12.3C nights, 13 hours of sun and a 13.9C sea.

Monterey's forum calls August one of the foggiest months of the year, with roughly half of August days seeing some fog — mornings can start grey and clear to sun by afternoon, or stay socked in past 3pm. Regulars flag the peninsula's sharp microclimates as the real story: Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach see more fog than Monterey itself, while Carmel Valley inland sees very little — layers are essential regardless of where you're headed.

September is Monterey's warmest and among its sunniest months - August is the foggy one - and the forum describes late August through early October as the local Indian summer, with fog generally burning off around 10am and staying away through the evening. The averages are modest by visitor standards: highs around 72F, which regulars are careful to say is not sunbathing weather, and evenings cool enough to want a jacket. The peninsula's other habit is worth knowing - one side can be in sun while round the corner is under fog. Their own pick is very late September into early October. The record: 21.1C days, 13.2C nights, 0.5 precipitation days, 11.2 hours of sun, humidity 81 percent and a 16.4C sea.

Regulars are specific this month splits into two real halves - the first typically sunny and warm, an Indian-summer stretch some years pushing into the 80s Fahrenheit, while the second cools off with a real chance of fog rolling in or light-to-moderate rain, though genuine rain stays rare this early. Our row backs that mild, genuinely dry read, 21C over 11.6C nights, with rain minimal at 13.9mm across just 1.4 days and humidity at 77 percent. Regulars are consistent this counts among the sunniest months on the coast overall despite the back-half cooling, layers the standard advice for a day that can swing from warm sun to fog. The sea sits at a cold 15.4C, bracing for most swimmers regardless of the air temperature. The record: 9.8 hours of sun, an 11.8 kph wind and AQI 35.

Monterey-forum threads on December weather are candid that it swings between genuinely lovely and properly rainy with little warning, chilly regardless of which version shows up, especially right on the water. Posters describe the appeal both ways: a clear day delivers brilliantly sunny conditions that regulars call some of the best sunset light of the year, while a stormy stretch brings dramatic cloud formations and crashing waves some visitors find just as compelling. Coastal storms are described as short-lived, typically a day or so before clearing. The clear upside is thinner crowds than summer, giving spots like Cannery Row and the aquarium a calmer feel. The record: 15.9C days feeling like 14C, 7.3C nights, 76mm across 7 days, a 13.7C sea, 78 percent humidity and 7.1 hours of sun.
