Forum posters consistently name the broader October-March window as Coorg's best stretch, with the Christmas-New Year run (roughly December 20-January 5) as genuine peak season - expect inflated prices and advance booking to matter. January itself gets praised for excellent, comfortable conditions, typically 15-25C, well suited to outdoor activities like trekking, angling and general sightseeing; nights turn notably chilly even as days stay pleasant. Raja's Seat (a garden lookout, recommended especially in the evening) and Talacauvery (the source of the Cauvery river) are the two most-cited sights for a January visit.
Madikeri's own forum is direct that July is peak monsoon in Coorg, but multiple posters were clear it's still considered an all-weather destination - routine rain doesn't shut things down, and there's a real appeal to the lush, misty 'monsoon freshness' that draws some visitors specifically for this season. The caveat repeated across threads is that a genuinely heavy downpour can close individual sites temporarily and make roads slippery, so it's not the trip for a tightly packed sightseeing itinerary. Anyone who wants dry, sunny Coorg weather instead should aim for October through March.
