ラパスへ行く前に知っておきたいこと

健康

A traveler recounts a genuinely scary bout of altitude sickness on arrival in La Paz, the world's highest capital at 3,650 meters, describing it starting as a mild headache that escalated fast enough to worry her. Her hard-earned advice: build in one to two full rest days before any activity, arrive well hydrated, skip alcohol and hard exercise for at least the first 48 hours, and don't dismiss coca tea, which hostels commonly offer and which she found genuinely helped settle the nausea and headache.

ラパスの旅行者の声

実際に訪れた人たちの声です — 通年のメモを先に、そのあと月ごとに並べています。

La Paz-forum threads on January clothing needs confirm it's the wettest month of the year at this altitude, but posters describe the actual experience as manageable rather than miserable - one visitor got by with just a hooded jacket and small umbrella, clear weather for most of the stay despite the statistical odds. The standing advice across every thread is serious layering given the altitude: warm midday sun that can flip to a genuinely cold evening within hours, a sturdy rain jacket or poncho considered essential regardless of the forecast. Crowds and prices both stay low this time of year, a real upside for anyone touring the city's cultural sites rather than heading straight to the more weather-dependent trekking routes. The record: 17.3C days feeling like 18C, 6C nights, a notably high 115mm across nearly 25 days, 1.3cm of high-altitude snowfall, 84 percent humidity and 10.1 hours of sun.

Almost every La Paz-forum thread is really about altitude, and April - the tail of the wet season, before the clear winter months - is no exception. The city runs from about 3,300m to 4,100m, the highest capital in the world, and the advice regulars repeat is to arrive and do nothing: rest the first day, drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, eat lightly, and if you can choose, sleep low, in Zona Sur, until you feel right. Paracetamol for the headache, Diamox by prescription if you want the insurance. Most people are fine and fitness does not decide it - the adaptation is partly genetic. The record for April: 17.3C days against 3.4C nights, 13.3 precipitation days, 1.6cm of snow, 10.3 hours of sun and AQI 25.

La Paz's forum calls May the start of the dry season — clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine, warm enough to go without a jacket in the sun during the day. Regulars are consistent that the temperature drops sharply the moment the sun sets, and that a proper fleece or medium-weight jacket is essential for the night regardless of how warm the afternoon felt.

July is Bolivian winter and in La Paz the number matters less than the sun. Regulars give roughly 7 to 17C and then explain it: in direct sun you can get by in short sleeves, and the moment it sets - before six - you want jeans, a jacket and a hat. Our row's 16.4C day against a -2.1C night is that swing, one of the widest anywhere in this dataset, and it comes from 3,600m of altitude rather than latitude. The dryness helps, with winter humidity rarely above 35 percent making the cold more bearable. Anything higher is a different proposition: the altiplano and Salar sleep above 4,000m and drop to -10C, with trekking nights of -15 to -20. Layers, always. The record: 2.5cm of snow, 2.8 precipitation days and 10.4 hours of sun.

Regulars are direct that the cold here is an altitude effect rather than a storm system - blue skies and pleasant daytime sun alongside nights that drop sharply once the sun sets, with a fleece usually enough in the city itself but real layers needed for sleeping. Our row backs the extreme day/night swing, 16.8C over a genuinely cold -1.6C night feeling -5C, with rain a minor presence, 14.3mm across 4.4 days, and a trace of snow, 1.4cm. Regulars are clear this city's own cold is mild next to the high-altitude Salar de Uyuni region, where the same August nights can drop to -15C or colder on a multi-day tour - a different, harsher cold than La Paz itself sees. The record: humidity 69 percent, 10.8 hours of sun, a 14.6 kph wind and AQI 27.

Regulars are consistent that the city's roughly 3,600-meter elevation shapes daily comfort here more than the calendar does, humidity staying low year-round and clear blue skies typical through the tail end of the dry season this month represents. Our row backs that cool, genuinely dry read, 17.3C reading as a mild 16C, over 0.9C nights feeling -2C, with 31.2mm of rain across 12.1 days and a trace of early-season snow, 1.1cm. Regulars are specific that acclimatizing to the altitude itself, not the temperature, is the real first-day concern for most visitors arriving from sea level, headaches and shortness of breath common regardless of season. Layers that handle a genuinely large day-to-night temperature swing remain the standard packing advice. The record: humidity 77 percent, 10.9 hours of sun, a 15 kph wind and AQI 42.

Forum posters describe November as transitional - not usually much rain yet even though it's technically edging toward the rainy season, so conditions are described as hard to predict precisely but generally fine for a visit. Nights and early mornings at this altitude are called genuinely freezing, with coats needed until the sun is properly up, after which most visitors can shed the heavy layers during the day. For those continuing on to the Salar de Uyuni, November can still catch the tail end of the dry season in some years, though posters stress layering, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses) and being ready for either pattern given how variable the month can be.
