hiking

We spent three days in Huaraz itself before starting the Santa Cruz Trek, using the town's own 3,052 meters as a base to acclimatize, and filled the time with day hikes up to Laguna Churup and Laguna 69, both well above 4,000 meters. That prep mattered once we were on the trail proper, which climbs from around 3,650 meters to the 4,750-meter Punta Unión pass over four days with no way out once you start. One person in our group felt off before day one and wisely waited a day to let the symptoms clear rather than push through, which the guide said was exactly the right call given how remote the route gets.

Huaraz's forum is upfront that January sits deep in the rainy season, but posters were consistent that it doesn't mean rain all day - showers tend to arrive in the afternoon, sometimes sporadically, leaving mornings usable for day trips. The bigger practical concern raised repeatedly was road safety: mudslides and landslides on mountain routes are a real risk this time of year, making overland travel less predictable than during the dry season. May marks the start of the dry, high season that most trekkers wait for instead, though one upside forum regulars noted for January is that Andean nights run noticeably less cold than during the July/August dry-season peak.

Huaraz-forum threads on a February visit describe reaching spots like Llanganuco or Laguna Churrup as genuinely still possible, posters warning real views are unlikely given the season's cloud cover. Regulars call February genuinely not a good time for the region's hiking-dependent appeal, one expert flatly stating this given how much the wet season limits visibility. Posters call bus service genuinely reduced this time of year, several regulars naming one morning departure per company as standard from October through April. Regulars call the Cordillera Blanca's famous mountain views genuinely the real casualty of a February visit, several threads naming this the honest tradeoff for anyone still choosing to come. Posters recommend real flexible expectations and backup plans, several regulars calling this standard given how weather-dependent the whole experience is. The record: 18.4C days, 10.2C nights, an extraordinarily high 218.6mm across nearly 28 days and 87 percent humidity.

Huaraz-forum threads on an Alpamayo Circuit attempt in late March describe this as sitting well within the wet season, posters calling real caution warranted given how often the high peaks stay obscured in cloud. Regulars describe a passing shower on trek as genuinely common rather than exceptional, some estimating rain a real possibility most afternoons through the stretch. Posters recommend June through August as the genuinely favored window for serious high routes, March better suited to lower valley walks and acclimatization hikes. Regulars call real waterproof gear non-negotiable for anyone attempting a route this early. Posters describe river crossings and trail conditions as considerably harder to judge during the wetter months, current local reports worth checking first. Regulars call the mountain scenery worth the tradeoff for flexible visitors. The record: 18.1C days feeling like 20C, 10.1C nights, an extraordinarily high 247.5mm across over 30 days and 88 percent humidity.

Huaraz-forum threads on hiking the Huayhuash Circuit in April describe this as genuinely the tail end of the wetter season, posters calling conditions unpredictable but improving steadily through the month. Regulars call regular afternoon storms still a standing feature, mornings generally the more reliable window for hiking especially on lower day trips. Posters recommend waiting for May if a flexible schedule allows it, several regulars calling that month considerably more reliable for the full circuit. Regulars describe April as still doable for shorter routes, real planning around the afternoon pattern making it workable. Posters call real waterproof layers essential regardless of how clear the morning looks. Regulars recommend checking trail and weather conditions with a local guide before committing to a multi-day route this early. The record: 18.6C days feeling like 20C, 9.7C nights, an extraordinarily high 159.2mm across nearly 29 days and 85 percent humidity.

Huaraz-forum threads on May trekking confirm this marks the start of the favorable Andean winter stretch that runs through September, the season regulars recommend for the Huayhuash and Santa Cruz circuits. Posters describe a typical day as clear and sunny through the morning, with cloud and a real chance of an afternoon shower building as the day goes on, especially early in May before the pattern fully settles. Nights at altitude stay genuinely cold regardless of the daytime, proper cold-rated sleeping gear essential for any multi-day trek. Regulars recommend building a spare day or two into any circuit itinerary in case a system moves through mid-trek. Independent trekking is called doable for experienced hikers, though a guide is still recommended for the more remote routes. The record: 18.4C days feeling like 19C, 9.2C nights, a notably high 108mm across 26.1 days, 81 percent humidity and 10.5 hours of sun.

Huaraz-forum trip reports on June trekking describe daytime conditions as genuinely pleasant for the Cordillera Blanca routes, comfortable mid-20s Celsius by midday, though posters are consistent this drops off fast once the sun goes down, overnight readings at altitude regularly dipping toward the freeze point on the Santa Cruz and Huayhuash circuits. One trip report from a traveler who went in late May into June still encountered overcast stretches with light showers on several days, a reminder even the favored months aren't fully settled every year. Regulars call June through August the season most trekkers target, festivals adding real energy to town alongside the trekking traffic. Posters recommend a proper down layer for camping regardless of how the daytime temperature reads, altitude making the overnight swing genuinely dramatic. The record: 18.4C days feeling like 17C, 8.1C nights, an extraordinarily high 138mm across nearly 16 days and 74 percent humidity.

Forum posters describe July as inside the reliable dry 'Andean winter' trekking season (roughly May-September) here, generally favorable for multi-day routes like Santa Cruz and the Huayhuash Circuit. That said, posters are candid the day itself can still swing between warm and windy/cold, and afternoon rain (commonly arriving around 3pm) is a recurring pattern posters recommend planning around by starting hikes earlier in the day to get ahead of it. One trip report specifically described a full day of alternating warm and cold, windy stretches on a Huayhuash trek, underlining that 'dry season' here means favorable odds rather than a guarantee of stable conditions throughout a long trekking day.

Huaraz-forum threads on day hikes describe safety as genuinely better further from the city itself, posters recommending established trekking routes over casual walks in the immediate vicinity. Regulars call Laguna Churup and Laguna 69 both real August options, though both top out at serious elevation and altitude sickness is a genuine concern worth planning around. Posters recommend the Llanganuco Valley and a trip to Lake Paron as strong additions beyond the two main lagoon hikes. Regulars call bus travel considerably easier between April and October, more daytime departures running during this stretch than in the wetter months. Posters recommend real acclimatization time before any serious August hike, several regulars calling this the single most common mistake among first-time visitors to the region. The record: 19.1C days feeling like 19C, 8C nights, an extraordinarily high 73.2mm across over 19 days and 62 percent humidity.
