We picked Aswan over Luxor for our felucca sail specifically because the Nile narrows here between pink granite boulders, and the two-hour route around Elephantine Island past the botanical gardens was as scenic as anyone had promised. Since the boats have no engine and rely on the north-to-south wind, our captain explained we'd sail upstream but mostly drift or row on the way back, so departure timing mattered more than we'd expected. We booked the sunset slot from the Corniche, and watching the sun drop behind the desert cliffs while gliding past a Nubian village on the bank was worth planning the whole day around.
