Note dei viaggiatori su Swakopmund

Cosa dice chi c'è stato: prima le note valide tutto l'anno, poi mese per mese.

Swakopmund's forum calls January lovely and sunny on the coast, noticeably cooler than inland Namibia thanks to the cold Benguela current offshore. Regulars note the main summer rains only really pick up toward the end of January, and that any rain tends to arrive as one short, brief burst rather than a sustained downpour — book accommodation early since this overlaps South Africa's peak school-holiday season.

February is the month several Namibia regulars book: long days, warm inland, few other visitors, and the desert occasionally in flower. Swakopmund itself is the exception to the country's weather - the cold Atlantic against warm air makes fog, it happens year-round, and it is the coastal strip around here that gets it rather than the interior. The forum's motto for the coast is to see things when the sun shines rather than plan a fixed schedule. The activities are dune-based and run regardless: the Living Desert tours, quad biking, sandboarding, and the seal kayaking out of Walvis Bay. The record: 26.4C days, 16.6C nights, 1.3 precipitation days, 11.4 hours of sun, an 18C sea and AQI 24.

March and April are the months regulars name for the western Namibian desert, and Swakopmund's own weather is a standing curiosity on the forum. Rainfall here is under 20mm in a whole year - so little that gutters and drainpipes are a rarity on the buildings - and our row's 7.2mm across 1.1 precipitation days is the March share of that. What the town actually gets is fog: the cold Benguela current meeting warm desert air produces a belt that reaches up to 140km inland, with more than 180 thick-fog days a year on this coast, and it usually burns off around eleven. Our gauge cannot see any of it. The sea is 16.1C under a 26.8C day, which is the same current. The record: 16.2C nights, humidity 71 percent, 11.1 hours of sun and AQI 22.

Regulars warn that this coast is the damp, foggy, cold exception to a country people picture as desert, and they give the mechanism: the Benguela current runs cold offshore, warm land air meets it and turns to fog, which usually burns off by about eleven. So an April morning here is grey and the afternoon is not. The same current keeps the sea near 14C even in summer - our row says 15.8C - and swimming is, in their phrase, not for the fainthearted. Rain is essentially absent at 0.7mm across 0.2 days, with 27.1C days over 15.8C nights and a 21.6 kph wind off the water. The record: humidity 63 percent, 10.5 hours of sun and AQI 24.

Forum posters consistently describe July right on the coast here as cold, misty and damp by local standards, with morning fog a near-daily feature that usually burns off by midday, occasional sandstorms, and sea temperatures posters call genuinely frigid for swimming. This coastal fog-belt chill is a distinctive local microclimate, and the destination's own broader climate average (which factors in the surrounding desert air beyond the immediate waterfront) reads noticeably milder than the fog-belt feel posters describe - so the real gap is less about which number is right than about how narrow and coast-hugging Swakopmund's famous chill actually is. Posters consistently recommend packing for two seasons in one day: light layers for whatever sun breaks through, plus a proper fleece or jacket for the cold, foggy mornings and evenings, and booking tours in advance since afternoon winds can pick up fast.

Regulars explain a phenomenon specific to this stretch of coast: the water runs cold, and when warm land air meets it, fog forms and typically burns off by around eleven in the morning, a daily pattern rather than an occasional event. Our row backs the cool sea at 16.5C and the dry warmth above it, 25.1C over 13.2C, with rain essentially absent at 0.4mm across a fifth of a day. One visitor's account of a dry sand storm and heavy wind rather than any rain fits our real 23.4 kph column closely. The nearby Skeleton Coast beaches run colder still, close to 11C with currents regulars call genuinely dangerous rather than merely chilly. The record: humidity 69 percent, 11.9 hours of sun and AQI 32.

Regulars are specific this month marks the real start of warming up here, most of the year's rain actually arriving in January and February rather than now, with the town filling up as Namibians head to the coast for their own summer beach holiday. Our row backs that mild, genuinely dry read, 25.2C over 14.4C nights feeling 15C, with rain essentially absent, 1.7mm across half a day, and a real 22.6 kph wind. Regulars are consistent this counts as one of the more crowded windows of the year locally, worth booking ahead precisely because of the domestic holiday crowds rather than international tourism alone. The sea sits at a cold 16.6C, the Benguela current keeping it bracing even in full summer. The record: 11.8 hours of sun, humidity 72 percent and AQI 32.
