Bon à savoir avant de partir à Nadi

Visas et formalités

We took the local bus around Nadi rather than a rental car, and while it was old, loud and slow, it turned into one of the more memorable parts of the trip just from the conversations with other passengers. Namaka and Martintar covered every practical need, pharmacies, supermarkets, small shops, while the produce at Nadi Market was some of the cheapest and freshest fruit we'd had anywhere. We visited the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple, which stood out architecturally against everything else in town. Being on the drier western side of Viti Levu, we lucked into blue skies most of the week even outside the official dry season.

Notes de voyageurs sur Nadi

Ce qu’en disent celles et ceux qui y sont allés — d’abord les notes valables toute l’année, puis mois par mois.

Forum posters are direct that March is both the hottest and, statistically, the wettest month in Fiji - the tail end of the wet season, with a real possibility of a late-forming tropical cyclone. Posters describe a typical pattern of hot, humid days broken up by short, sharp afternoon showers rather than sustained all-day rain, and several posters report entire March trips with only occasional showers or no rain at all, alongside others who got more consistent afternoon storms. Posters consistently note that Nadi and the mainland tend to see more rain than the outer islands, which typically get away with just a brief afternoon shower even during this wetter stretch - and posters generally recommend travel insurance covering weather-related cancellations given the real cyclone-season risk.

June is Fijian winter and the start of the good half of the year: low humidity, days around 27 to 30C and nights cool enough to sleep in, which our row puts at 29.6C and 19.9C. It is the dry season, and regulars are careful to say that dry does not mean rainless - most people visiting in May or June report a tropical shower at some point, and our row still counts 2.6 precipitation days carrying 46mm. The other feature of this half of the year is the south-east trades, which blow from May to October and can get strong in June, July and August. The sea is cooler than it is from November to April and still, in their word, wonderful. The record: feels-like 33C by day, humidity 80 percent, a 27.9C sea and AQI 19.

July is the middle of Fiji's dry season, May to October, and the forum's description is 27 to 30C with low humidity - their winter, which in the tropics means warm days without the stickiness rather than anything actually cold. The southeast trades blow right through the dry season and hardest in June, July and August; locals call them the seven-day winds, because they get up and then blow themselves out over about a week. On a windy evening a jumper at dinner is not a joke. The sea sits around 24C on their account, a couple of degrees below our row's 26.5C. The record: 29.4C days that feel like 32C, 19.4C nights, 2.2 precipitation days carrying 34.3mm, 9.7 hours of sun and AQI 20.

Fiji-forum threads on August weather single out the western side - Nadi, Lautoka, out to the Mamanuca Islands - as the drier half of the country, making it the favored pick for an August trip. It's called a cool month by Fiji standards, clear and sunny most of the time though a two-to-three-day cloudy spell is considered normal, and when precipitation does show up it's typically brief rather than an all-day event. Posters do flag that the last couple of years have seen occasional soggy spells even in this normally reliable month, worth knowing even though it's still the exception. The record: 29.2C days feeling like 32C, 19.4C nights, 76mm across 3.6 days, a 26.2C sea, 77 percent humidity and 9.7 hours of sun - warm rather than the cool local framing, genuinely sunny in between.

Fiji's forum rates September as a genuine shoulder-season sweet spot — the dry season's low humidity holding, tourist numbers and prices both down from the winter peak. Regulars still flag the odd brief shower as normal, not a sign to change plans.

Regulars are specific Nadi itself stays meaningfully drier than wetter parts of Fiji like Suva even as the wider country heads toward its wet season, forecasts often showing rain that in practice arrives as passing showers rather than a washed-out day. Our row backs that hot, genuinely wet read, 30.8C reading as a scorching 36C, over 21.4C nights feeling 24C, with a substantial 112.4mm of rain across 7.7 days and humidity at 79 percent. Regulars are consistent the heat and humidity together can feel like a sauna the moment you step off the plane, tropical downpours capable of arriving suddenly and heavily without much warning regardless of the forecast. This still counts as a favourite month for many regular visitors despite the real rain risk. The sea sits at a warm, swimmable 27.1C. The record: 10.5 hours of sun, a 12.1 kph wind and AQI 19.

Nadi-forum threads on December weather are consistent that the wet season's arrival doesn't mean constant rain - the more typical pattern is a sunny morning followed by an afternoon or evening shower or thunderstorm, hit-or-miss day to day but rarely a full washout across a whole trip. Posters note the western side of the main island, where Nadi and Denarau sit, runs meaningfully drier than the north and east coasts, and the outer islands generally see less rain than the mainland regardless of season. December also sits inside cyclone season, running November through April, which regulars flag as worth monitoring even though most Decembers pass without a direct impact. Despite the wetter, riskier calendar slot, the month remains genuinely popular - many resorts booked out months ahead for the holiday stretch. The record: 31.8C days feeling like a punishing 38C, 23.1C nights, a notably high 255mm across 15.2 days, 83 percent humidity, a 29.9C sea and 10.1 hours of sun.
