Se déplacer

A traveler's safety guide to Medellin notes that the rare problems visitors do run into happen almost exclusively in taxis, where a driver occasionally works with an accomplice who's tipped off about the passenger. His practical routine: sit in the back seat, keep windows most of the way up, and text a friend the taxi's license plate before pulling away, confirming again once you've actually arrived. He also prefers Uber over street taxis specifically because it logs the driver's verified identity and a GPS trail of the route.

Notes de voyageurs sur Medellín

Ce qu’en disent celles et ceux qui y sont allés — d’abord les notes valables toute l’année, puis mois par mois.

The weather in Medellín is quite mild it well deserves its common motto of 'City of eternal spring'. Average daily temperatures are 22°C (71°F), range from 15 to 30 °C (60º-85°F). Humidity is comfortable in the 50%-70% range. Due to its proximity with the equator there is little variation with the seasons. Due to the high altitude and moderate overcast skies Medellín stays cool, with an occasional couple hours of strong sun light. As Medellín is located in a tropical country, the absence of air conditioners in Medellín often takes foreign visitors by surprise. Air conditioning is used in downtown areas. Fresh air comes from the mountains surrounding Medellín on all sides, and provides Medellín with the perfect climate. At night time the temperature is usually in the 10-15°C (50-60°F) range, and depends mostly on if its raining or not. The majority of restaurants are in open air environment, without walls, because of the perfect climate.

The eternal spring thing is real — 22-28°C all year, which is why every month scores alike. January is the driest, and that's the whole difference. Afternoon rain is the pattern the rest of the time, so plan mornings.

The eternal spring is real in the sense that matters: regulars put the whole year at roughly 77 to 82F by day and 58 to 63F at night, and our February reads 28.9C over 18C. They call February part of the drier season, December to March, and our row looks like a flat contradiction at 166.7mm across 21.5 precipitation days. Their own description resolves it - it rarely rains all day here, sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon but not usually both - which makes those 21.5 days about eight millimetres each. Flash afternoon thunderstorms are the usual form. The record: humidity 82 percent, 9.9 hours of sun, a 5.4 kph wind and AQI 56.

The city of eternal spring earns the name in our data: every month of the year tops out between 27 and 29C, and June reads 28.2C over 17.8C, which matches the board's mid-eighties by day and mid-sixties at night almost exactly. The rain column looks alarming at 26.7 days, and regulars defuse it before you can worry - it rains nearly every day but not all day. Sunny morning, shower from about four, sixty to ninety minutes, done. Plan the outdoors for the first half of the day and the 215.7mm stops mattering. At 87.3 percent humidity 28C reads as 32C, which is the one real cost. The record: 9.6 hours of sun, an almost still 6 kph wind and AQI 47.

Forum posters describe July as mostly great, sunny weather - not the rainy season - with days in the mid-80s F and nights in the mid-60s F. Some light rain and cloud cover are still normal on a given day, but long-term residents are clear it doesn't typically rain all day, and the standard advice is to carry a small collapsible umbrella alongside sunscreen since conditions shift through the day. Timing a trip for late July has an extra payoff: it lines up with La Feria de las Flores, the city's biggest annual festival.

August in the city of eternal spring is warm, flowery and wetter than the nickname implies - our row counts 24 precipitation days carrying 178.8mm, which is most days of the month. The forum's correction is about timing rather than quantity: when it rains here it is usually late afternoon, evening or the middle of the night, often predictable almost to the hour, so the daylight hours mostly survive. They are also blunt that Colombian weather apps are useless inland, forecasting rain and thunderstorms every single day, because microclimates, mountains and altitude defeat them. August still has plenty of flowers, if fewer than July. The record: 29C days that feel like 33C, 18C nights, humidity 82 percent and 10.3 hours of sun.

Regulars are specific that rain here varies so much by neighborhood that it can be genuinely pouring in Poblado while a nearby area like Laureles stays sunny at the very same hour, weather apps notoriously unreliable at capturing that hyperlocal split. Our row backs that hot, genuinely wet read, 28.7C reading as a hot 33C, over 18.1C nights, with a substantial 222.6mm of rain across an extraordinary 26.5 days and humidity at 84 percent. Regulars are consistent that a downpour typically lasts only 30 minutes to an hour, usually arriving in late afternoon, with plenty of nice weather still available earlier in the day. A compact umbrella carried at all times is the standard advice rather than trusting any single forecast. The record: 9.9 hours of sun, a 6.6 kph wind and AQI 49.

The Medellin forum's answer to December weather is about the shape of the day, not the month: mornings and early afternoons are gorgeous, and it tends to rain after two or three o'clock, so posters tell visitors to put the indoor half of the plan there. What falls is spotty and comes and goes, sometimes with thunder, rather than settling in for the day. The other December fact is the alumbrados - the Christmas lights switch on around 2 December and run to 6 January, and the whole month is festive, with the riverside displays drawing very large crowds. The record explains the hedging: 22 precipitation days but only 150.7mm between them, 28C days feeling like 31C, 17.8C nights, humidity near 85 percent, 9.6 hours of sun, AQI 53.
