The practical read for a March visit: expect a cool, blustery coastal city rather than the lively beach-resort feel Qingdao is known for in summer, with the upside being a much emptier, calmer version of the same sights.

Qingdao's forum rates most of September as a solid time to visit — past summer's hot, humid peak (already milder than Beijing or Shanghai) and ahead of the region's cold, grey winter.
