April is the month the Ha Long forum names first: summer coming on, temperatures around 28C, mostly sunny, and ahead of the rainy season. It is also low season for visitor numbers apart from two dates - 30 April and 1 May, which are public holidays and fill everything. The caveat is visibility rather than rain. Fog can still shut the bay down, with boats held in harbour and cruises cancelled, and a milder haze is common enough that regulars argue it improves the view rather than spoils it. Thunderstorms can roll through at any hour, usually brief downpours lasting a couple of hours rather than settling in for the whole day. The upside several posters mentioned is timing a visit around the local rice harvest, which adds a striking gold-and-green layer to the karst scenery that isn't there year-round.

Forum posters give genuinely mixed reports on December here: one visitor described the weather as glorious - dry and sunny nearly every day and pleasantly warm until the back half of the month, when nights turned much colder - while another had the opposite experience, with rain and fog obscuring the views. A recurring concern among posters is the famous rice paddies: their vivid emerald green fades to a muddy brown by December, well after the harvest, which changes the classic photogenic scenery many visitors expect from photos taken earlier in the year.
