A guide to walking York's medieval Shambles recommends getting there before 11:30am, since the narrow, overhanging-building street genuinely fills up as the day goes on and becomes difficult to photograph or even walk through comfortably by midday, especially on weekends. Their alternative tip for anyone who missed the early window: come back at the end of the day as shops close, when the crowds thin out again and the street's medieval character is easier to actually take in.

Notas de viajeros sobre York

Lo que cuenta la gente que ha estado allí: primero las notas válidas todo el año y después, mes a mes.

Forum posters describe York's weather as classically changeable - rain can arrive suddenly in the middle of a sunny stretch, or the sun can break through mid-downpour - with prolonged frosty spells and fog also part of a typical winter. On snow specifically, opinions hedge: some call it unlikely in February, others call February the month it's most likely if it happens at all, which lines up with the real pattern of light, inconsistent snowfall rather than a reliable white winter. The overall read is that with the right layers - a lined, hooded coat, gloves, quick-dry trousers and comfortable waterproof boots - the city is still very walkable and enjoyable in February.

Regulars are specific rain here is best treated as roughly a coin flip on any given day, a wet spell typically affecting part of the day rather than all of it, the city walls themselves only closing at dusk or if conditions turn genuinely bad - very wet or icy. Our row backs that mild, genuinely wet read, 17C over 6.9C nights feeling 4C, with 48.9mm of rain across 9.5 days and a real 19.5 kph wind. Regulars are consistent daylight stretches out noticeably by this point, useful for fitting in the Minster, Clifford's Tower and a full walk of the city walls in a single visit. Layers for a genuinely cool wind remain the standard advice even on a dry day. The record: 10.8 hours of sun, humidity 77 percent and AQI 41.

June is the month regulars pick for this part of England on the balance of weather against crowds - there is a real step up in York between June and the height of July and August - with the standing caveat that the city is busy whenever you come, so weekdays beat weekends. The weather argument is daylight rather than heat: 17 hours of it, the most of any month, with 10.9 hours of sun. Temperatures are modest, 19.6C reading as 18C in a 20.1 kph wind over 10.1C nights, and rain is 54.9mm across 8.9 days. Shorts for the good days, a waterproof for the rest. The record: humidity 75 percent, a dew point of 10.2C and AQI 37.

The most useful July advice on the York forum is about the clock, not the sky. Regulars say the city is busy through the day - the Shambles in particular gets packed - and that crowds drop away sharply in the evening, which is the nicer time to walk the streets. Shops in the centre generally stay open until 20:00, with pubs, restaurants and things to do running well past that, so an evening arrival is not a wasted one. The one hard deadline is the city walls, which close at dusk: about 9pm in July. Weather-wise the expectation is very warm and sunny, especially before the school holidays start, with showers that do not tend to last. The record: 21.8C days, 11.9C nights, 11.1 precipitation days and 73.5mm, 10.8 hours of sun inside 16.5 hours of daylight, AQI 32.

York's forum describes the city's weather as much like the rest of the UK in August — changeable, with rain that can start suddenly mid-sunny-day or clear just as suddenly mid-downpour. Regulars note the Yorkshire coast runs noticeably cooler than inland York if there's a north-easterly breeze off the sea, and that August is peak season so hotels and parking book up fast.
