We booked a taxi in Morondava for about 20 dollars round trip to the Avenue of the Baobabs, timed deliberately for sunset when the low light turns the trunks copper and gold and the shadows stretch dramatically across the dirt road. There's no entrance fee at all, just a small kiosk selling overpriced drinks near the visitor center, which we skipped in favor of bringing our own water. The Baobabs in Love, two trees twisted together as they grew, was a quick but worthwhile detour nearby. Back in town we took a local pirogue out through Canal Hellot, drifting past mangroves and fishermen repairing their boats, a genuinely calm contrast to the more famous avenue.
