Notas de viajeros sobre Hermanus

Lo que cuenta la gente que ha estado allí: primero las notas válidas todo el año y después, mes a mes.

Hermanus's forum is upfront that January is the wrong month for the whale watching the town is famous for — the season runs June through December, peaking in August and September, so January visitors mostly miss out bar the occasional early mother-calf pair. Regulars say it's still worth the stop for the cliff path, galleries and cafes even without the whales.

Hermanus is the town people come to for whales and February is not the month: the season runs June to the end of November, peaking August to October with the calving peak in August. Regulars are honest that there are still whales now - Bryde's and some humpbacks - but not in numbers and not from the shore, which is the whole point of this coastline. What February offers instead is a proper Western Cape summer, and our row bears it out at 25.3C over 16.5C with 18.3mm across 4.5 precipitation days and 11.6 hours of sun. One number to plan around: the sea is 14.7C, cold enough to change what a Blue Flag beach like Grotto means in practice. The record: humidity 71 percent, an 18.7 kph wind and AQI 33.

Regulars are direct that this is the wrong month for the town's main draw: the southern right whale season runs June through November, peaking in September and October, and whales are seldom seen outside that window. The advice that follows is to come for everything else instead - the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley, the cliff path along Walker Bay, Fernkloof Reserve's hiking trails - rather than plan a trip around a sighting that won't happen. Our row backs a mild, sunny autumn, 24.3C over 15.6C nights, with 33.1mm of rain across 7.1 days and a real 17.9 kph wind. Crowds are noted as thin this time of year, an off-season quiet that suits the wine-and-walking version of a visit. The sea runs a cool 16.5C. The record: humidity 75 percent, 10.2 hours of sun and AQI 30.

Forum posters describe July as sitting in the Western Cape's winter rainfall season, meaning wet, cloudy and sometimes stormy conditions are a real possibility - posters are direct that a visit could bring lovely sunny weather or pouring rain and gale-force winds, genuinely either extreme. Posters consistently name June through November as whale-watching season in Hermanus, with whales arriving around July and departing by October or November, but flag peak sighting reliability as running August through November rather than July itself, when the season is just getting underway. Posters generally recommend a July visit primarily for early whale sightings and off-peak crowds, while accepting real winter-weather uncertainty as part of the tradeoff.

Regulars are specific early in this month is genuine shoulder season, glorious sunny weather pushing into the high 20s Celsius just as likely as a day below 20 with real wind and rain, both real outcomes rather than one being the norm. Our row backs that mild, genuinely dry read, 22.5C over 13.7C nights feeling 13C, with rain light at 39.8mm across 7 days and humidity at 73 percent. Regulars are consistent this counts as one of the best windows for spotting Southern Right Whales, especially early in the month, while also running far cheaper than peak season, some places still at roughly half their high-season rates with noticeably fewer tourists. The sea sits at a cold 15.7C. The record: 11.2 hours of sun, an 18.2 kph wind and AQI 34.

November is the far end of the southern right whale season here, not the middle of it. The animals come into Walker Bay from about June to calve and mate, and by late November the mothers and calves are leaving - the calves already half the size of the adults. Whales are commonly still seen into December, but in far fewer numbers than the August to October peak, and regulars say every year differs. If you are here now, your odds improve on a boat trip or by driving round the bay to De Kelders. The weather is the easy part: 23.5C over 14.7C, 31.5mm across 4.9 precipitation days and 12.1 hours of sun. The sea stays cold at 17.3C. The record: humidity 71 percent, a 19.2 kph wind and AQI 31.

December is after the whales. The season runs roughly June to the end of November and peaks from August to October; by November the numbers are already thin, because the animals head back south to feed over the southern summer, so a December sighting is unlikely rather than merely lucky. What December gives instead is the town without the crowd the whale season brings - which regulars say is when Hermanus is at its best: the Cliff Path along the shore, and the Hemel-en-Aarde valley wineries behind it. The record: 24.5C days that feel like 26C, 16.2C nights, 6.2 precipitation days carrying 27.1mm, 12.5 hours of sun, an 18.3C sea and a 20 kph wind.
