diving

We started with the Lusong Gunboat, shallow enough at five to fifteen meters that even our less experienced diver in the group felt comfortable, before working up to the much bigger Irako Wreck, a 147-meter former refrigeration ship that felt genuinely epic descending onto it. Barracuda Lake was the strangest dive of the trip, a thermocline layer around 14 meters where the water temperature jumped so sharply it felt like swimming into a different lake entirely. Knowing these are actual WWII Japanese Navy ships sunk in a single 1944 air raid added a weight to the dives that pure reef diving never has. We'd read the wreck diving here was world class and it still exceeded what we expected.

Notas de viajeros sobre Isla de Corón

Lo que cuenta la gente que ha estado allí: primero las notas válidas todo el año y después, mes a mes.

Regulars are specific seas between Coron and El Nido typically stay calm this month thanks to the prevailing wind direction, no typhoon risk though a genuine tropical rain shower lasting anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of hours remains possible. Our row backs that hot, genuinely wet read, 28C reading as a scorching 32C, over 26.3C nights feeling 28C, with 55.5mm of rain across 7.2 days and humidity at 76 percent. Regulars are consistent this counts among the best annual windows to visit the Philippines generally, calm seas making island-hopping and diving trips genuinely reliable. The sea sits at a bath-warm 28.2C. The record: 9.7 hours of sun, a 26 kph wind and AQI 36.

February is the month regulars here prefer to April - the summer heat has not arrived and the amihan, the cool dry north-easterly that blows from December to March, keeps the land comfortable. Our row reads 28C over 26.1C nights at 76 percent humidity with 32.2mm of rain across 4.8 days, which is the pleasant half of their answer. The other half is the same wind seen from a boat: at 27 kph it raises a chop, and January to May can be rough enough that island-hopping itineraries get rearranged on the morning. The sea is 27.6C. Ask what the wind is doing before booking a small outrigger rather than after. The record: 10.5 hours of sun and AQI 39.

Coron's forum calls late February into March dry season, with regulars reporting good odds of clear skies and excellent water visibility for diving. It can feel considerably hotter than the numbers suggest once humidity is factored in, so regulars pack accordingly and plan water activities for the middle of the day when the heat is at its worst.

April is peak season across Palawan and Coron is no exception: dry, hot and busy, with flights priced accordingly and the crowds heaviest in the first week, which is Holy Week - the part regulars say to avoid outright, when everything ramps up to manic. Late April is the better half, and one report of it has fantastic weather without the crush. On the boats, the standing advice is an early start and Kayangan Lake first, before the day's tours converge on it. Our row is dry but hot enough to need managing: a 29.5C day that feels like 35C, and nights that barely fall, at 27.4C. The record: 4.3 precipitation days carrying 30mm, 11.4 hours of sun and a 29.3C sea.

Forum posters describe September as genuinely rainy season here, with Palawan more exposed to the southwest monsoon and rougher seas than other parts of the Philippines at this time of year - one visitor spanning late August into mid-September experienced rain most days with only about four largely dry ones. Posters are consistent, though, that showers are typically short, sharp afternoon events rather than sustained all-day rain, and that a full week without rain during rainy season is entirely possible too. Posters describe real week-to-week variability - four to five days of uninterrupted good weather, or a storm system bringing two to three rough days - and generally recommend staying flexible with island-hopping plans and accepting some rain as the tradeoff for September's quieter crowds.
