Safety
A couple who felt Namibia was one of the safest countries they'd ever visited had that impression shaken on a Saturday night in central Windhoek, where they were nearly mugged. They're careful to note this didn't sour the trip: Namibians were overwhelmingly friendly and the country felt peaceful everywhere else they went, but their takeaway for the capital specifically was to avoid walking around after dark, not flash phones or cameras on streets like Independence Avenue, and take a taxi or hotel-arranged transport once the sun is down.
Traveller notes on Windhoek
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
May opens Namibia's dry season, which runs through to October, and the forum rates May and June as the quiet, high-value end of it: the rains have stopped, game viewing in Etosha improves as animals concentrate on waterholes, and the crowds have not arrived. Windhoek runs near 24°C by day with essentially no rain — under one wet day in the month — beneath blue, cloudless skies. The catch is the mornings: an average low near 11°C, and campers report 2°C at dawn. Regulars pack warm jackets, gloves, socks and hats for early starts, and that is not over-preparation.
Forum posters describe November in Namibia as building toward stuffy, hot nights, with daytime heat intensified by generally dry air and little cloud cover to offer relief - posters name October and November as feeling like the hottest months of the year for exactly that reason. One visitor's November 2017 trip reported a genuinely dry heat throughout, with no rain at all aside from a sandstorm and heavy wind near Swakopmund. Posters consistently recommend a sun hat as essential and suggest a light sweater for early mornings, while noting evenings otherwise don't require much beyond typical warm-weather clothing. Posters generally rate November as hot but manageable for visiting Windhoek, with the dry heat easier to handle than a humid equivalent.
