practical
We relied on Ola for getting around the city, transparent pricing that made budgeting far easier than negotiating with auto-rickshaws every ride. The Aga Khan Palace gave us real context for India's independence movement that we hadn't expected from what looked like a simple architectural stop. Hiking up to Sinhagad Fort just outside the city rewarded us with sweeping views once we reached the top, though the climb itself was steeper than the photos suggested. FC Road became our regular spot for cheap, excellent Misal Pav and Vada Pav from street vendors, a sharp contrast to the more polished dining scene around Koregaon Park. We visited in winter specifically to avoid the wet season other travelers warned us about.
Traveller notes on Pune
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Pune forum regulars call October through February the best window, and January sits right in the middle of it: pleasant to mild cold, mostly in the night and early morning, while it becomes hot during the daytime, with light warm clothes enough for the cooler hours rather than heavy winter gear. The day-night swing is the defining feature — “cold during night but its absolutely pleasant during daytime” — described consistently across threads as the reason this window works well for sightseeing. Rain is effectively off the table this time of year. Our record: 28.7°C days, 16.1°C nights, just 1.4 rain days and an AQI of 124 — warm by day with a real night-time drop, matching the “pleasant day, cool night” read; the AQI is the one thing the pure-weather praise tends to leave out.
Forum posters consistently rate monsoon season as the best time to visit Pune, describing conditions as marvelous and a real step up from the dusty, occasionally cold winter. Posters cite typical daytime highs around 28C and nights around 20-21C, with rain arriving as occasional heavy showers followed by drizzly, cloudy afternoons rather than the all-day downpours posters associate with Mumbai. Posters credit Pune's natural dryness and elevation for a kind of built-in air conditioning effect during the rains. Posters also flag a genuine health upside: mosquitoes stay scarce through the monsoon, only returning in parts of the city around October. Posters generally recommend nearby spots like Malshej Ghat as a monsoon-season highlight, best visited in July or August.
