Traveller notes on Puerto Madryn
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Forum posters describe February temperatures in this part of Chubut province commonly reaching around 30C - notably warmer than much of the rest of Patagonia at the same time of year, since this is the height of the Southern Hemisphere summer. Posters are consistent that Patagonia's weather stays genuinely unpredictable regardless of season, with real rain or strong wind always a possibility worth packing for. February does fall within the good window (October through the end of March) for visiting the nearby Punta Tombo penguin colony, a popular half-day trip from town, though posters note it isn't the right time of year for orca sightings, which cluster around a different part of the calendar.
Argentina's forum places August squarely in the colder, quieter stretch of the Patagonian season - real winter, needing a heavy coat and proper layers - but Puerto Madryn specifically stays worth the trip because whale season runs roughly June/July through early December, so August sightings are reliably good. Posters were clear the penguin colonies don't arrive until September, so anyone hoping to see both in one trip needs to time it later. September onward gets recommended as conditions across the wider region genuinely improve, but for whales alone, August already delivers.
