Getting around

A first-timer's guide to Honiara warns that the drive from the airport into downtown, just over 10 kilometers, can take well over an hour depending on traffic, so it's worth building that into arrival-day expectations rather than assuming a quick transfer. Once in the city, their advice was to agree on a taxi fare before getting in, since meters aren't standard, or use the shared minibuses that run the main road for a cheaper if slower alternative, and to visit the Central Market in the morning when it's busiest and freshest.

Traveller notes on Honiara

What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.

Forum posters name June through September as the Solomon Islands' dry season, but are direct that 'dry' is relative here - Honiara is fairly humid year-round and receives rain literally every month, roughly 2 meters of it annually. Posters describe a typical day as mostly sunny with some overcast periods and passing showers, sometimes heavy at night, and note this general pattern holds fairly consistently across the calendar rather than shifting dramatically between wet and dry stretches. Posters generally still rate June as one of the more comfortable months, with the lower humidity of the dry season the main practical upside over the wetter months later in the year.

There isn't a lot of month-by-month detail in the Solomon Islands forum, but one thread does flag that travelers should weigh whether they're arriving in a windier or rainier stretch of the year before booking, and December falls squarely in the latter. It's the wet season here - expect rain most days, oppressive humidity, and a heat index that climbs well past what the thermometer alone suggests once the tropical sun breaks through between downpours. It's still doable if you don't mind ducking into a café or market stall when the sky opens up, but don't expect long dry stretches.
