Food & drink
A traveler describes an evening at El Parián in Tlaquepaque, a covered market about 20 minutes from central Guadalajara by Uber, as delivering the real Jalisco experience she'd been hoping for - ordering a cantarito, the regional clay-pot cocktail of tequila, citrus and mineral water, and having a mariachi band perform directly at her table later in the night rather than from a distant stage. Another traveler describes a different way to experience the region's signature spirit: the Tequila Express, a Saturday train running from Guadalajara out to the town of Tequila itself, roughly an hour through fields of blue agave recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, with mariachi music and tastings included on board. Posters generally rate Tlaquepaque as worth treating as a full separate outing rather than a quick stop, given how much of the mariachi-and-cantarito experience depends on staying into the evening rather than passing through during the day, and recommend booking the Tequila Express specifically if a full agave-country day trip appeals more than staying in the city.
Traveller notes on Guadalajara
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Forum posters describe June as the start of Guadalajara's rainy season, but note the pattern is genuinely manageable: rain hardly ever falls in the morning, so outdoor plans scheduled early in the day tend to go untouched, and afternoon or evening downpours come down hard but rarely last for hours. Posters do flag real traffic disruption during rainy season, especially between 4 and 7pm, when flash flooding can affect underpasses across the city. Posters consistently recommend carrying an umbrella and, for those sensitive to bites, some mosquito protection given the wetter conditions. Posters note temperatures drop noticeably and pleasantly right after a downpour. Posters generally rate June as warm and rain-prone but easy to plan around, mornings and evenings the reliably pleasant stretches of the day.
December is among Guadalajara's coolest months, and the forum's framing is all about the daily swing: comfortable by day at around 25°C, then dropping away sharply once the sun goes — the record puts nights near 12°C. Pack for both ends, light fabrics for the afternoon and a proper jumper or jacket for the evening. Rain is essentially finished by December, two days across the month. One practical warning if the trip covers Christmas itself: a great deal closes for the key days in Mexico.
