  Beargrass, glacier lilies and paintbrush come out behind the retreating snow, so the meadows at Logan Pass peak weeks after the valleys. Beargrass has big years and quiet ones rather than flowering evenly.

  The berries ripen on the slopes from mid-July and every roadside stand in the Flathead sells them by the pint. So do the bears, which is why trail closures cluster in the same weeks.

  Cottonwoods along the lakes go first and the western larch turn gold in the first half of October, the one conifer here that drops its needles. The crowds have gone and half the services have closed with them.
