  A landslide at Pretty Rocks took out the road halfway along. A new bridge opened in August 2026 for hikers and cyclists only; buses still stop at Mile 43.   Private cars stop at Savage River at mile 15 and everything beyond it is by transit bus, which runs from around 20 May until the second Thursday after Labor Day. Book the bus before you book the flight. Source ↗

  The dwarf birch and blueberry go red across the whole open tundra for about three weeks from late August, well before the aspens down at the entrance. Bears are on the berries at the same time, which is why the buses stop.

  Once the buses stop you can drive your own car to the Teklanika at mile 30 until the road ices up, usually somewhere around mid-October. The trains from Anchorage and Fairbanks have already stopped and the hotels are boarded. Source ↗
