culture
We walked the whole Old City on foot, the spice-scented alleys of Souq al-Hamidiyah leading us right up to the Umayyad Mosque, which felt genuinely awe-inspiring given how much history the city carries. A local guide walked with us for a few hours and was patient with our questions, pointing out details in the old courtyard houses we'd have missed entirely on our own. We lost count of how many times a shopkeeper insisted we sit for tea or coffee, refusing would have felt rude given how it's clearly meant as genuine hospitality rather than a sales tactic. We dressed modestly and asked before photographing anyone, which was met with nothing but warmth in return.
Traveller notes on Damascus
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Forum posters consistently name April as a fantastic time to visit Damascus, describing typical daytime temperatures around 17-22C with fresh, clean air and sunny conditions - a genuine step up from the cooler, wetter winter months, with spring generally rated the best season in Syria overall. Posters describe nights as still noticeably cool this time of year, a normal feature of Damascus's inland, semi-arid climate. Posters who have visited recently describe feeling safe and impressed by the Old City, though ongoing safety and travel-advisory discussion is a real and current part of forum conversation about visiting Syria - a topic largely separate from, but worth weighing alongside, the genuinely pleasant spring weather itself.
