Food & drink
At 1,500 meters up, Dalat's cool, foggy mornings were a genuine relief after weeks of lowland Vietnam heat, and we walked everywhere in the city center without breaking a sweat for once. We rented a motorbike with an English-speaking guide for a day and spent it hopping between coffee farms, roasting our own beans at one stop and tasting varieties we'd never heard of at another. Strawberry picking on a hillside farm just outside town turned into an unexpectedly fun afternoon for the whole group. For dinner most nights we skipped the tourist restaurants entirely and ate upstairs at Dalat Market, where a full bowl of noodles cost less than a dollar.
Traveller notes on Dalat
What people who have been say about the place — the year-round notes first, then month by month.
Da Lat sits at 1,500m, which is the whole point — the forum's line is that the highlands run noticeably cooler than the coast, and February is fine, sunny and cool: 24°C by day but 14 overnight, so a sweater is not optional. The timing advice is sharper than the weather advice. Tết, the lunar new year, lands mid-February, and its disruption runs about a week before and two weeks after — inflated prices, congestion, closures. Regulars say go no sooner than mid-February, and note that March is warmer still if the dates can move.
Forum posters describe Dalat, sitting at around 1500m elevation in Vietnam's Central Highlands, as a genuinely good pick for anyone bothered by the heavy humidity found elsewhere in the country - noticeably cooler than the coast year-round. Posters are direct that July through September remains rainy season regardless of the pleasant elevation, with July specifically described as bringing rain almost daily and humidity reaching around 92%. Posters consistently note the rain pattern favors afternoons, meaning heavy, humid showers rather than an all-day washout, and generally recommend scheduling outdoor plans for the morning. Posters generally rate August as genuinely rain-prone but comfortably cool by Vietnamese standards for Dalat, its elevation the main advantage over lowland destinations during this stretch of the wet season.
